Special Issue in Brain Sciences on Neural and Cognitive Mechanisms of Tinnitus, Hyperacusis, and Misophonia
Researchers and clinicians working in tinnitus and sound intolerance are invited to contribute to a Special Issue titled Neural and Cognitive Mechanisms of Tinnitus, Hyperacusis, and Misophonia in the journal Brain Sciences.
This Special Issue provides an opportunity to advance integrative, mechanism-focused research examining tinnitus, hyperacusis, misophonia, and related sound sensitivity conditions. These disorders are increasingly understood as heterogeneous phenomena arising from complex interactions between peripheral auditory pathology, central auditory processing, and cognitive and affective systems involved in salience, attention, and threat detection.
The initiative is aligned with the scientific themes of the 4th World Tinnitus Congress and XV International Tinnitus Seminar (WTC/ITS) and the 8th International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia (ICHM8). Together, these meetings are expected to generate new research and interdisciplinary collaboration, and this Special Issue provides a publication pathway for mature, peer-review-ready manuscripts emerging from this work.
Submissions are invited in the form of original research articles and high-quality review papers exploring auditory, neural, cognitive, neurological, psychiatric, and neurochemical mechanisms related to tinnitus and sound intolerance.
Relevant topics include cochlear and auditory nerve mechanisms, cortical and subcortical auditory processing, auditory–limbic and salience network interactions, sensory gain and gating processes, predictive processing and threat learning, emotional reactivity, attentional control, emotion regulation, compulsivity, comorbidity, and individual differences related to development, trauma, and neurodiversity.
Studies employing neuroimaging, electrophysiology, psychophysiology, clinical assessment, computational modelling, and experimental paradigms are particularly encouraged.
